  1. The Musical Baton
Blogged on Wednesday 18th May 2005 at 10:52:46 AM by David

Well, I went to Autistic Cuckoo to retrieve a link to an article for someone on the webdev forums (by the way, if you're reading this Tommy, you write kick-ass articles) and something caught my eye.

So, I figured that without being invited (as seems to be the general trend) I'm going to steal the musical baton and subject you to my views on the matter.

    Total Volume:
11.7Gb but I still have a few CD's that I'd like to get onto my HDD

    Last CD Bought:
Frantic Euphoria Mixed By Anne Savage (is actually 3 CD's)

    Song Playing Right Now:
The Used - Buried Myself Alive

Five Songs I Listen to A Lot, Or That Mean A Lot to Me:

A Perfect Circle - The Noose
    Feeder - Comfort In Sound
    Muse - Stockholm Syndrome
Story Of The Year - Swallow The Knife
    Coldplay - The Scientist

Five People to Whom I'm Passing the Baton:

Anyone who wants it, if you don't have a blog then write about it in a comment here, I don't mind, just as long as you don't tell me that my taste in music sucks. Cheeky

Edit @ 7PM: Since I see that Jona has not made a musical baton entry, I am handing him the baton. I would also like to offer the baton to Dunstan in the hope that he will return to his blog and make an entry, God knows it's been long enough.

  2. I Fancy A Change
Blogged on Tuesday 17th May 2005 at 4:24:38 PM by David

A change of web-host that is, one month today and the domain name expires, so all of you cock heads who want to try and order it before I get a chance to re-register it better snap into action.

One month minus one day today and our hosting expires, THANK GOD. I think I'm gonna head over to godaddy.com, dirt cheap and a damn good hosting package. I was looking at the Deluxe Windows hosting package on this page. ASP support and PHP support, so it'd be possible to use AP 2 until I finish Fog 1. Also, 2Gb of space is fairly awesome, especially when you consider that at the moment our curent host offers a whopping 50Mb. Snore.

I think I'll also check the box for "Traffic Facts" because I probably won't be arsed to work in any sort of stat gathering code into Fog and it might be able to tell me some useful stuff.

I just priced up a plan now with 24 months hosting and the traffic stats (which for some reason only lasts 12 months), the total cost came to $190.56 which when converted into real money is £103.58 according to xe.com. I'm not sure whether I should get the domain from godaddy as well, or whether I should get it from that place where you can get them for 99 years at a time. That way I'd never need to bother worrying about renewing the domain at a later date since I'll probably be dead before it expires.

  3. The Next Blog
Blogged on Friday 13th May 2005 at 12:20:20 AM by David

I've decided, the next version of the blog will be called Fog.

    PHP blog
    PHP log
    PHPlog
    PHog
    Fog

I was just gonna leave it at PHog but then idiots would ask me stupid questions like, "How do you pronounce PHog?" And when I tell them they'd go on to say stupid things like, "No, it's pronounced P-Hog idiot."

And yes, in case you didn't already realise, it's gonna be in PHP. I'm sick and tired of hearing about the things PHP can do that ASP can't. It has a shit load of built in functions that I could use instead of things that I've had to write all my own functions for the long way round.

One of the things I wanted to do in QR was allow some markup to be entered in users comments, then I wanted to strip out illegal tags and validate the comment. Well it turns out that ASP simply isn't equipped to do that but PHP can do it in about 2 lines. Maybe ASP.net can do that, I don't know and I don't care. I've lost my patience with this whole ASP thing.

Another thing that pisses me off about ASP is VBScript. I fucking hate it. To write in ASP you either have to use JScript or VBScript, I'd love to use JScript since it's similar to JavaScript, but unfortunately all of the web-sites that have ASP tutorials on them use VBScript and so does the book that I bought. Grr.

So yeah, I've picked up a PHP book that I've had sitting on my bookshelf for a while now and I've started reading it. I skipped the first few chapters about how to configure and install the software that comes with the book because it's fucking ancient and doesn't work on XP. Now I've just raced through the first few chapters on variables, flow control and functions. I swear that from what I've read so far it could almost BE JavaScript. The biggest difference I've noted is that . is used to concatenate variables instead of the + symbol.

I think I'm just at the stage where the really meaty stuff starts so hopefully I'll be able to get really stuck into that. I'll also give WAMP server another go, because it'd be really handy to be able to test what I'm writing on a localhost.

  4. Obligatory Election Waffle
Blogged on Friday 6th May 2005 at 7:46:27 PM by David

So, the British general election was yesterday and I hope that all you British types when out and votorated. If you didn't then you're either under 18 or you're a cunt who doesn't love his country, both in some cases.

I went out and voted for the Conservative party, primarily because I don't like Labour. It was touch and go for a second when I saw we had a BNP candidate though. j/k Cheeky

Anywho, in my constituency Labour went and won anyway, and in all of the hundreds of constituencies all around me. In fact, if you were to add the votes that went to the second and third place parties, Conservative and Liberal Democrats respectively, they still wouldn't have beaten Labour, who pulled in 49.8% of the votes.

If you're interested in learning more about how the country voted then here's a map over at the BBC's site. To find out how things went on where I live, here's another link for you to click, if it's not too much strain for you. You need Flash and JavaScript for the map page to work by the way. Fuck knows why you need JavaScript, the whole damn thing is Flash.

  5. Deletion
Blogged on Friday 15th April 2005 at 2:37:25 AM by David

So as some of you may have noticed the last three blogs that I made have been deleted. All of the entires are still in the database, but they are no longer shown, so if I ever feel the need to restore them I can, but I don't think I will. What could be the reason for this? Well, I didn't think that they fit in very well with the theme of QR. This isn't my place to vent, this is my place to be random and every so often approach a serious topic only to veer off at the last second and drive off a cliff into a writhing seething pit of random crap.

So, with that said I am going to write about what heppened today, and by today, I mean yesterday. It's kinda late yeh see. I have something to keep me occupied during the days now, I'm doing some tech work (for free) for the CLC (community learning centre) near where I live. Today I built 6 shuttle PC's before 11AM. 6 PC's!!! That's a record for me.

After 11AM I didn't really have much to do and I didn't have a PC to work on so I just spent the rest of the morning rolling around the office on my swivel chair. Then later on I had a PC bestowed upon me, it's pretty cool, 1Gb of top notch Corsiar RAM, AMD 64 3400+, the only thing lacking it the graphics card really, an ATi 9500 I think, I can't really be sure as I don't care much for ATi cards.

I casually inquired if anyone would mind if I were to bring UT2004 in and install it onto the machine to play in the dull moments, to my absolute surprise they said, "sure whatever, it's your machine." HOLY SHIT YEAH!!!

Anywho, not much else interesting happened today, except for the fact that I think I must have ruptured a major artery in my face which blasted blood out of my nose, I think I lost about 6 pints. I had 3 nose bleeds today, holy shit. An interesting thought occured to me, I've built twice the number of PC's as I've had nosebleeds today, not many people can make that claim, HA! But I guess that not that many people would want to.

A final note about the lack of emoticons in this post, well yeah. I've been tending to over-use them on MSN (along with the word, "lol") so I'm trying to ween myself off them. I hope you can forgive me master, oh wait, not master, bitch, that's right.

    147325 411.
