Rather Good Films
Blogged on Tuesday 7th June 2005 at 9:57:43 PM by David

For me, a good film has to be good all the way through, with little or no boring bits in it. If at any point I catch myself wondering how long I have to sit there before the credits roll up then it's NOT a good film. Also, it has to be a film that I could watch again and again without getting tired of it. I'll try and keep the list reasonably original and avoid the totally obvious films that everyone (or almost everyone) likes such as Shrek and The Matrix and hopefully a few people will rent/download/buy some of these films and enjoy them. With all of that said and done with, here are some of my favourite films.

My favourite film (for the moment at least) has to be What Dreams May Come, I saw this film on TV a while ago and I recently downloaded it to watch it again (unfortunately there were no DivX versions available so I had to download the entire DVD rip). It's a very good film starring Robin Williams and to a lesser extent Annabella Sciorra. It's one of those films that makes me think that God might just exist after all, if only for a short while. I can recommend this film to absolutely anyone and everyone.

Another good 'un is Bruce Almighty starring Jim Carey and Jennifer Aniston. For those of you who think that Jim Carey can only do stupid idiotic kids films like The Mask and Liar Liar then you're wrong, while the film does have it's moments of comedy, (and of course his trade mark funny faces), it's also a good film at the same time, and there's probably even a moral hidden in there somewhere as well. Wink

Now onto a comepletely different type of film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I like this film for a different reason entirely, I like this one because you get to see people getting seriously hurt. Grin It's not exactly a film for the squeemish but if you like a film with lots of suspense and people being slashed to pieces then this is for you.

The Butterfly Effect is a very thought provoking film starring Ashton Kutcher as he tries to fix things in the present by changing certain key events in the past, but all he seems to be able to do is make things worse. It's a serious film with an occasional light hearted moment.

Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind stars Sam Rockwell and George Clooney and is about the supposedly true life story of Chuck Barris (some American TV game-show host). When watching this film it's fun to entertain the thought that maybe these events actually happened, however unlikely it may seem. If you're a fan of the TV series Alias then it's a safe bet you'll like this film.

Finally is Back To The Future starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, do I even need to explain how awesome this film is? Really? OK then, it's mind blowingly awesome, and so are the two sequels. Really. I give it an awesome out of 10 rating.

Well, that's you're lot I'm afraid, just the six. If I think of any more I'll come back and edit this. Some films that almost made it onto the list were White Noise and Queen Of The Damned. White Noise was good all the way through but the ending was just horrifically bad. Queen Of The Damned was OK-ish I guess, but it didn't come close to touching the book.

So what about you? If you have a list of your favourite films them please post a comment about them, or write about them on your blog. I'd love to find out about some new films that perhaps I haven't taken note of before. All of the films on my list are relatively new, I don't tend to like as many of the older films, however if there's an outstanding one that I should know about please let me know.

Ehm... I don't watch that much TV... bleah. Oh... Mosquito is the funniest movie in existence, I reccomend that. (You know they didn't mean for it to be a real horror movie 'cuz the black guy lives.)

Nah, funniest (horror) movie in existance is Club Dread (I can't believe it didnt get a mention on your post David!) it has violence and an extremely hilarious ending (and middle)..what more can you ask of from a film?

On a more mind-bending headache inducing note, the film The Machinist is one of the better films I've seen this year, even if it was unbelivably confusing.

Hey David! Ok, some other ridiculously awesome movies (bear in mind I am pretty dark and I have a terrible weakness for outcasts Grin )

Phantom of the Opera (the one that just came out). Frikkin'. Awesome. Gorgeous music, lavish sets, gothic romance, lethal love triangle, plus a murderous, good-looking outcast. Delicious film.

Edward Scissorhands. To steal your words David- must I even explain the greatness of this film? Johnny Depp in fetish clothing with blades for hands- good lord, its orgasmic! And an unsettling, tragic ending. Gives me a lot of angst. Even more than usual.

Nightmare Before Christmas. It doesnt have to be Christmas or Halloween to enjoy this movie. Quirky characters, amusing songs, and original plot. Very entertaining.

That's all i can think of for now.

Firstly, i have to say that Sin City is by far one of the most funny, violent and in an odd way gory film ever! Its just an absolute masterpiece.

Also, im glad to hear that Phantom of the Opera has just had such a glowing review as ive just rented it, partly because i wanted to see it and partly because it was the only film at the rental shop i hadnt seen already Grin

TCM is an awesome movie. I've seen that twice, but...well, I don't like the part where the guy is hanging on meat hooks. I'm pretty squeemish (incase you all didn't know, I lost it during "Saw" and passed out Grin), so...yeah, I don't like that part.

Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind is another awesome one. I love how he goes around just...killing people. It's awesome.

I don't know many other good movies... well, I can't be assed to think of them.

well, i guess that kinda makes me somewhat inhumane as i didnt find either TCM or Saw that gory, infact, i think i spent most of both films laughing loudly and mainly at the fun way people were killed/mamed. Grin

Hmm, The Machinist was a bit of a wacky film, when I left the cinema I had a loose grasp on what I think had gone on, it was a real mind bender.

I am currently downloading PSP9, after it's finished I will begin downloading Phantom Of The Opera from Antony who rented and ripped it (thanking you kindly), I hope it's as good as you say it is Liz 'cause it's pretty hefty download at 1.4Gb. Wink

I can't say the idea of Jonny Depp in fetish clothing turns me on all that much, but I do think it's a good film, I don't actually remember how it ends though, maybe I'll download that as well.

Sin City was a FREAKING AWESOME film, if you've ever played Max Payne, it's a lot like that. I think there was also a Sin City game, in which case, it's probably fairly similar to that as well.

Saw was just funny, also, nice ironic name 'cause the guy saw's his own foot off. I'm with Antony on this, I laughed most of the way through. Grin
