HDD Killers

Living Up To Expectation

Posted on Wednesday 15 February 2006

Time to live up to the name in the URL. Here are some pics from the autopsy of a 120GB drive that passed on a while ago. The actual capacity of the drive was 111GiB and I used it to keep films on. Unfortunately it started causing my PC to blue-screen and I had to get the data off it unplug it. It’s been sitting on my desk for a while and then I decided to open it up. I took some pics of the insides … and a cat.

Here are some of the best pics that I took of the drive:

  • Dscf0023.jpg – The camera auto-focused on the ceiling because the drive surface is so reflective, kinda cool.
  • Dscf0024.jpg – Taken without flash, the drive is sharp and the ceiling reflection is softer.
  • Dscf0032.jpg – I tried to get the lens hidden behind the centre of the platter, unfortunately the drive isn’t as clean as I’d like.

And the cat:

I am fully aware that I’ve uploaded more pictures of the cat than of the drive. I took a lot more pictures than these (41 in total), I just picked these out because I liked them. I’ve also resized them down to 1/16 their original size for easier downloading. All of the pictures were taken with a Fujifilm FinePix S9500.

On a random note, I really like this song.

Moving on, here are some more downloads. A while ago I wrote about going to a LAN party, here’s an excerpt from that entry:

Apparently there was also a camera in the corner of a room taking a picture every 15mins and Comm is going to make it into a video, when he’s done that and if I remember, I’ll put a link to it on here so you can all watch the approximately 4-5 seconds of footage. Oh yeah, I can tell you’re excited!

As it turns out, the camera took pictures at 15 second intervals, not 15 minute intervals. Comm uploaded the video for LAN3 on 30th January. He also uploaded a video for LAN4 which took place on 28-29th January. So now I upload them here for you all to see in their splendiferous glory.

I’m jealous. You either have a much better camera, or I’m just bad at taking pictures.

    …probably the latter.

It’s both, Ben. Except you’re not “bad”, you’re “absolutely fucking horrible”. And I’ve never even seen a picture taken by you…

    I want a LAN party 🙁

Well the camera is pretty good and I’m not exactly a photographer, so it’s probably mostly the camera.
